RATIONALE

This module enables you to consolidate and demonstrate your learning and apply the principles of problem identification, critical thinking and evidence-based practice in an area related to your field of nursing practice.

This module provides an opportunity for you to refine and demonstrate independence in developing ideas, constructing sound arguments and to justify and defend developments in practice. The module builds on previous study undertaken at level 5, utilising the theoretical knowledge acquired relating to research methodologies and methods together with skills in the critical evaluation of published research. It provides you with an opportunity to plan an in-depth investigation on a topic of your own choice. The module involves independent study under the guidance of a research supervisor. You are expected to engage in a wide literature search, to support a literature-based research proposal or paper for publication.

AIMS

The aims of this module are

1. To demonstrate the capacity for autonomous and independent enquiry through the identification of a topic within their field of nursing suitable for in-depth study.

2. To advance critical enquiry through the completion of literature review, based upon an area of nursing care and clinical practice.

3. To encourage commitment to your professional development as independent learners, and practitioners as you progress through your career.

4. To extend your knowledge and skills in relation to research methodologies and methods, strategies for evidence-based practice, strategies, and the ethical complexities within healthcare research.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the skills required for independent thought by the identification of a project focus and critical enquiry.

2. Critically evaluate and analyse methodological issues and research findings related to the study.

3. Critically review the underpinning theory in the local, national, and international context.

4. Provide a plan or publication for a research project, in order that these may influence the practice of their peers and colleagues
